In-House Mentoring Programs

In-House Mentoring Programs

Are you looking to establish a mentoring culture within your organisation? Do you want to improve the  skills of mentors within your workplace? Are you wondering how to improve organisational capability in a more targeted, personalised way?

Well designed and managed workplace mentoring programs are a key strategy for building individual staff capabilities, encouraging proactive problem solving and supporting emerging leaders in organisations.

Best Practice Consulting has a proven track record helping organisations to design successful mentoring programs and training key individuals in the organisation to lead and manage the program into the future.

What is mentoring?

A mentor can be a described as a ‘wise and trusted adviser’. In the workplace, mentors typically have technical expertise or experience in the same field of practice as the person they are mentoring.

Ideally, the mentor is not usually responsible for the mentee’s performance. Through experience, he or she can facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills to less experienced staff, particularly those who are seeking to enhance their operational effectiveness and career pathway.

What does mentoring program design involve?

Best Practice Consulting’s mentoring programs typically include the following elements:

  • Mentor program design;
  • Mentor training; and
  • Mentor coaching.

Program design

Best Practice Consulting has expertise designing mentoring programs in line with specific organisational needs and incorporating staff development objectives.

Mentor training

The mentor training component is designed to develop the mentor’s skills, increase the mentor’s awareness of their role and responsibilities and highlight how the mentor can personally benefit from the mentoring process. Particular areas of focus include:

  • Roles and responsibilities;
  • Types of mentoring;
  • Encouraging reflection;
  • Facilitative versus directive mentoring;
  • Use of questions;
  • Providing feedback;
  • How to structure a successful mentoring session; and
  • Putting the skills into practice.

Mentor coaching

Mentor coaching can also be used on an individual basis to further embed the learning outcomes and provide a sounding board for mentors.
